Folklore and fiestas
The festivals of the Alpujarra are influenced by the numerous cultures that have lived in it, characterising the region with a great folkloric richness that has survived until today.
Each town celebrates its Patron Saint’s day with a “romeria”, a town feast where people dance and eat, always together with a lot of fireworks.
Fiestas during the year in the neigbourhood:
- 2nd and 3nd of January : Yegen – Fiesta in honour of the Nino Bendito
- 2nd of February : Yegen – Pucherico and Carnival
- 13th of May : Montenegro – The Pilgrimage of the Virgin of Fatima
- 24th of June : Yegen – The night of San Juan
- 8th of September : El Golco – Fiesta in honour of theVirgin of Gracia
- 29th/30th of September : Mecina Bombaron – Fiesta in honour of San Miguel
- weekend nearest around the first of November : Mecina Bombaron – Fiesta de la Castana
Special:
On the first saturday of august there is in Berchules a New years party.
About 8 years ago the electricity went out during the New years festivities.
The mayor decided that the “fiesta” must be done again in august.
This was a tremendous succes and ever since they also celebrate it on this saturday in august. Lots of young people from all over Spain come to visit it.
A Must:
On a saturday near to the 15th. of august(Assumption) there is always a “fiesta” organized by the friends of Mecina Bombarón.
On the “Era” above our house they thresh the grain, like in the old days. Everybody is welcome to have a drink and a free meal. In the evening there is dancing on the Plaza Vieja.
