Flora
The rich flora of the Sierra Nevada is of great value as it is one of the areas with the greatest biodiversity in Europe.
Whatever your knowlegde is of botany there is no doubt that you will enjoy the abundance of wild flowers in spring from Februrary to June depending on the altitude.
The zone of special scientific interest is that at an altitude of 3000m upwards where the combination of tundra conditions and warm Mediterranean air creates a zone unique in the world with a great many endemic species.
Specialists in orchids and aromatic herbs will also find lots to interest them at lower level.
The variety is what creates the interest, nature is constantly exploring the possible. The presence of a spring or a bit of shade can create a bit of Wales in the Mediterranean.
At about 30 kilometres from Granada there is a botanical garden “ La Cortijuela”, which amongst other things protects the endemic and endangered species of the Sierra Nevada.
